The American Bar Association International Law Section (ABAIL) has scheduled its annual career fair for November 3rd and 4th at the Hilton Garden Inn & Suites in Dallas, TX.

This event is designed for students and recent law school graduates, and lawyers considering a career change.

What are the goals of this organization?

ABAIL is an international organization that provides resources for lawyers and legal professionals in the United States and worldwide. The section comprises over 700 members from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

ABAIL provides training, scholarships, and networking opportunities for lawyers and students interested in international law. In addition, the section offers information and resources on issues relating to international law practice.

Who is eligible for membership in this organization?

To be eligible for ABAIL membership, a person must have graduated from an ABA-accredited law school. If you have been admitted to a law school in a foreign country, you may still be eligible for membership if you meet the National Conference of Bar Examiners requirements.

ABAIL members are lawyers licensed to practice law in the United States and territories. There are no requirements for becoming a member of ABAIL. Still, to be considered for admission to the ABAIL annual career fair, an applicant must demonstrate a minimum of two years of professional experience and education.

ABAIL members practice in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition, each ABAIL member must have practiced law for at least one year, and the member’s attorney registration in that state or territory must have been active for at least three years. More than 100 members represent the following states:

How are members appointed to the board?

The ABAIL board consists of ten members. The membership elects the chair. The term is for three years. The president of the ABAIL section appoints the secretary. The time is for two years. The president of the ABAIL  appoints the treasurerdivision.

Today, the American Bar Association’s International Law Section (IALS) celebrates its 60th anniversary. The IALS is the only section dedicated solely to international law. In addition to being the oldest section of the ABA, the IALS also holds the distinction of being the first section of the ABA to be chartered. The IALS was founded in 1956. Its purpose was to increase communication between members of the ABA who practiced international law and to provide guidance and direction to the ABA regarding international law. The IALS comprises three divisions: the International Law Committee, the International Law Library, and the International Law Section.
