However, the virus has negatively affected immigration applications who wish to enter Canada or the US. Having an immigration lawyer by your side can help increase your chances of qualification. Here, we will discuss the impact and effects of COVID-19 on immigration applicants.

Travel and Entry Restrictions

Those traveling by airplane will need to adhere to all airline guidelines and pass a comprehensive health test to board. People exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms will also not be allowed to enter the country by air.

Once you arrive in Canada, you will need to self-quarantine for 14 days, even if you have no COVID-19 symptoms. The IRCC is also prioritizing vulnerable groups, Canadians returning to Canada, and essential service workers.

The IRCC may also accept other permanent resident applications, but the virus has impeded their ability to do so.

Effects on Visitors to Canada

The virus has impacted accurate processing times. Applications also cannot be processed normally, as was the case before the pandemic.

Travel restrictions will have a significant impact on many people who cannot enter the country at the moment. As a result, the vast majority of non-essential travel to Canada has been restricted. However, you can still apply for an eTA or visitor visa, even if you are not eligible to travel at present. If your application is approved, you will need to wait until the travel ban is lifted before you can enter the country.

Effects on Foreign Workers on Canada

If you are a temporary worker, you will be exempt from the travel ban if you enter the country for a non-discretionary purpose. Certain persons who can work without a work permit may also be exempt from the current travel ban.

Effects on International Students on Canada

DLIs with a proven readiness plan to deal with the virus will be authorized to open their doors to international students. However, their plan must be approved by their respective territory or province.

The international student must also have been approved for a study permit or already have a valid study permit.

Effects on Refugees, Asylum Claimants, Sponsors, and PRRA Applicants

The virus and its prevention measures are currently impacting Canada’s ability to resettle refugees. Refugee departures to Canada will increase as soon as these Canadian and global measures are lifted.

Travel and Health Advice for Immigrants

Avoid non-essential travel whenever possible. Do not travel if you are exhibiting any COVID-19 symptoms, including fever, sore throat, headache, inability to taste or smell, and trouble breathing.

Practice social distancing of at least 6 feet when in public. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 30 seconds before eating or drinking. Wear hygienic gloves, and wear masks when you are in public. Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose, or mouth whenever possible.

Measures to Help Immigration Applicants and Newcomers

Canada is a very welcoming country to immigrants, with nearly a fifth of its population consisting of those born outside the country.

There are many post-CERB programs that you may be eligible for, including special and regular EI programs and benefits. You may also be eligible for certain tax flexibility programs.

The Canadian government may also accept certain applications on humanitarian or compassionate grounds. For example, they may provide asylum if they feel that the applicants may be persecuted or killed if they were to be sent back to their homeland.

An immigration lawyer will help you learn more about the financial and social programs that you may be eligible for.

Overall, COVID-19 has harmed global markets. Millions have lost their jobs, and millions have died. Due to the devastating effects of the virus, countries like Canada have been forced to take certain actions.

While some of these actions may seem harsh or unfair, they have been implemented to protect both immigrants and Canadian citizens until a vaccine has been found.

An immigration lawyer has the skills and knowledge needed to help you obtain the help you need and deserve. They will provide you with all the tools and information that you need to protect yourself and your loved ones before you begin your immigration application.
